Sweeter than Serenity: Why I Choose to Dress Modest

Why I Choose to Dress Modest

One of the biggest things that I have learned through blogging is to be your honest self. See, if I'm not being completely myself, then there's really no point in anyone reading my blog, because it wouldn't really be the "real me." I've thought about this topic for a long time, because the way that I choose to dress is 100% because of my faith, and I was worried that people wouldn't want to read what I had to say about that. With further thought, I decided that if people don't want to read about why I dress the way that I do, then there's really no reason for them to read my blog at all, because my faith defines me far more than my clothes.

So, how do I dress? I dress modest. I love to stay up on the latest trends, patterns, colors, etc., however, if it's not a modest trend, then I really don't take part in it. Now, I have already mentioned that I choose to dress this way because of my faith, but what is it about my faith that makes me want to dress this way? It's about honoring God with absolutely everything that I do in my life (including this blog!). However, my reasons for dressing modest do not apply only to those that are followers of Christ. My two biggest reasons literally apply to every single person, faith or no faith.

Honoring God means that I do not allow other men to look at me and have lustful thoughts because of the way that I choose to dress myself. I have become highly aware of this problem the more I hear from Godly men. It's a real problem when a girl walks by showing a bit too much of herself for a man. They're imaginations run away with them real quickly (they're just made that way, don't hate on them for it!), and it's hard on those guys that really don't want their thoughts to go there. If you're a married gal, then you don't want some girl walking by showing herself off and your husband see that. You want him to only see you. On that note, I don't want to be a girl that causes another woman's husband to stumble...or any man, single or married for that matter.

The next reason why I choose to dress the way that I do is because of the type of men that I want to attract. I have C and I love him very much, but I did not attract him by wearing as little as possible. To me, those girls that want to be "hot" so that they can get a man's attention are really cheating themselves, because to me, guys just look at those girls like a piece of meat, not as an actual person (at least the ones that would actually take advantage of her - again, not hating on the men). I want a man to look at me and think that I am beautiful/gorgeous/pretty/stunning...not hot. When I'm married and have that sort of relationship with my husband, then being hot is fine by me. But for now, I want to be beautiful, both inside and out. I'm lucky to have C and know that he looks at me and thinks I am absolutely stunning, and I want that for all girls, because it's really a great feeling to have someone think of you that way no matter what you actually look like.

Now, being modest doesn't mean that I dress in a giant oversized bag. I work out and I like how I look (thanks to the help of Beth Moore's book 'So Long, Insecurity'). I haven't always felt confident, but let's be real. I eat right, I exercise, and this is how I'm made, so I might as well be confident in that person, because as the saying goes, you only live once. Instead, I like to choose figure flattering clothes that aren't too tight, too low cut, or too short. Personally, I think you can be incredibly fashionable while dressing modest, and if that means that I miss out on a trend or two because it doesn't fit that bill, then hey, I'm ok with that.
